What an orthodontist does

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects the position of the teeth and the way the upper and lower jaws meet (the bite). Treatment can close gaps, straighten crowded or crooked teeth and correct problems such as an overbite. It is often done in childhood and the teenage years, but many adults have orthodontic treatment too.

The clinics listed above say on their own websites that they offer orthodontics: fixed braces, clear aligners, or both. Some are specialist orthodontic practices; others are general clinics with an orthodontic department or an orthodontist on the team. Clinics that list Invisalign or other clear aligners are included, because aligners are an orthodontic treatment.

Types of treatment

  • Fixed braces. Small brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected with a wire that is adjusted over time. Metal brackets are the most common. Ceramic or “sapphire” brackets are tooth-coloured and less visible, and usually cost more. The NHS says a fixed brace typically stays in place for 1 to 2 years.
  • Clear aligners. A series of transparent, removable trays, each worn for a set period, gradually moves the teeth. Invisalign is the best-known brand; some Prague clinics use other systems. Aligners have to be worn most of the day to work, so they suit patients who will wear them consistently.
  • Removable appliances. Plates that can be taken out are mainly used for children, for simpler corrections, or to prepare for fixed braces.
  • Retainers. After braces or aligners, you’ll need a retainer, either removable or a thin wire fixed behind the teeth, to stop the teeth moving back. The orthodontist will tell you how long to wear it, and the cost of retainers isn’t always included in the price of the braces.

What braces cost in Prague

Several clinics in our directory publish orthodontic prices. These are their own figures, as they appeared when we checked them in October 2026:

  • Kocman stomatologie lists fixed metal braces at CZK 32,000 and ceramic (sapphire) braces at CZK 42,000, with clear aligners from CZK 51,000 to 102,000 depending on the plan.
  • Svět rovnátek, a specialist orthodontic clinic, lists clear aligners from CZK 49,990 (minor correction, one jaw) up to CZK 109,990 for complex cases.
  • Dental Office H33 lists Invisalign at CZK 39,000–99,000, depending on the treatment.
  • DENT MEDICO Futurama lists an orthodontic consultation at CZK 900 for patients under 22.

Prices aren’t directly comparable: some include check-ups, retainers or both jaws, and others don’t. Before you start, ask for a written treatment plan that states the total cost, how many check-ups are included, and what retainers cost. See the prices published by Prague dental clinics for more treatments, and each clinic’s profile for its full price list.

Does Czech health insurance pay for braces?

For people in the Czech public health insurance system, orthodontic cover is limited:

  • Children and teenagers have limited cover for orthodontic treatment at an orthodontist who has a contract with their insurer. You may still pay for some appliances or materials.
  • Adults usually pay for orthodontic treatment themselves.
  • Orthodontists with an insurance contract are paid only for the procedures listed in the official reimbursement rules. Your registered dentist usually refers you to them.

Smart Care Dental Clinic, for example, says its orthodontics department has contracts with Czech insurers. Ask any clinic which insurers it works with before your first visit. Our guide to what Czech health insurance covers at the dentist explains the rules, and if you’re insured with VZP, see dentists in Prague with a VZP contract.

Private health insurance for foreigners and travel insurance rarely cover orthodontics. Check your policy before you rely on it.

Choosing an orthodontist in Prague

  • Check the qualification. In the Czech Republic, orthodontics is a recognised dental specialisation. The Czech Dental Chamber’s public directory of dentists at dent.cz/zubni-lekari records whether a dentist has a specialist qualification in orthodontics. Ask the clinic who will plan and supervise your treatment.
  • Plan for the whole treatment. Braces usually need adjustment visits every few weeks or months for one to two years, so choose a clinic you can reach easily. If you might leave Prague before treatment ends, ask what happens then: whether your records can be transferred and how the cost is settled.
  • Language. You’ll be making decisions over many months, so clear communication matters. Use the language filter above, or see English speaking dentists in Prague.
  • Children. Ask whether the clinic treats children, and at what age it recommends a first orthodontic check. Several clinics in our list treat both children and adults.
  • Look after your teeth during treatment. Keep brushing carefully around brackets and keep up regular dental check-ups while you wear braces.

Questions to ask at the first consultation

  1. What problem are we treating, and what are the options, including no treatment?
  2. Which type of braces or aligners do you recommend for me, and why?
  3. How long will treatment take, and how often will I need to come in?
  4. What is the total cost, what does it include, and how do I pay (in instalments or up front)?
  5. What retainer will I need afterwards, for how long, and what does it cost?
  6. Is any part covered by my health insurance?
