A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It has three parts:
Implants can replace one tooth, several teeth, or support a full set of teeth. “All-on-X” treatments, which some Prague clinics advertise, use a small number of implants to hold a complete fixed arch of teeth.
Implant treatment usually takes several months and several visits:
If you’re visiting Prague for treatment, plan for at least two trips and ask the clinic for a written timeline.
Implants aren’t suitable for everyone. You generally need enough healthy jawbone and healthy gums. Cleveland Clinic notes that people with active gum disease, severe bone loss or unmanaged diabetes, and smokers, are often poor candidates because these factors affect healing. Cleveland Clinic also notes that implant patients usually need to be at least 18. Your dentist should assess your general health and medications before recommending treatment.
With good care, the implant itself can last for many years, often for life. The crown or bridge on top wears and may eventually need replacing. Cleveland Clinic gives around 15 years as a typical lifespan for implant crowns and bridges. Clean around implants as carefully as natural teeth, and keep up regular check-ups and hygiene visits.
No. Under Annex 1 of the Czech Public Health Insurance Act (No. 48/1997 Coll.), dental implants, bone augmentation and crowns placed on implants aren’t paid for by public health insurance. Expect to pay the full cost yourself. If you have private or international insurance, check your policy, but most don’t cover implants as standard. See our guide to Czech health insurance and dental care.
